Laïko - contradiction deeply felt and voiced from within, living it openly, with emotional clarity

English Translation

The Laïko style brings the lyrics into a deeply emotional and personal space. The emotional directness of the style makes the paradox feel personal and immediate, rather than conceptual. The Greek language carries a natural intensity, which here feels both direct and expressive.

The female voice subtly shifts the perspective, giving the song a different emotional balance and presence. What might feel structured or philosophical in other versions becomes here something heartfelt, expressive, and deeply human.

Lyrics

I want to take you as my wife,
but my heart lies heavily,
I love you and yet I will eat you,
like a cigarette in the deep night.

Come to me and let me go,
but don't get too attached to me,
you are mine and free,
and this pain holds us together.

I want you free, my man,
but you are all mine,
don't look for a savior by your side,
but you are lost with me there.

Come to me and let me go,
but don't get too attached to me,
you are mine and free,
and this pain holds us together.

I respect your path,
but I want to change it a little,
I say that I love you as you are,
but in my words I will shape you.

Come to me and let me go,
but don't get too attached to me,
you are mine and free,
and this pain holds us together.

I want you to stand strong,
but to bend when I tell you to,
to scold me when I'm wrong,
and in the end to be silent here.

Come to me and let me go,
that's how this love is,
half fire, half knife,
and both lost from the start.

Laïkó

Laïkó (meaning "song of the people" is a popular Greek music genre that emerged in the 1950s as a mainstream, urban folk style, heavily influenced by traditional sounds, the buzouki, and emotional, relatable lyrics. It evolved from earlier Rembetiko music, becoming a blend of traditional folk and modern pop/rock, often played in nightclubs and restaurants.

Interaction Between Music & Lyrics

Following on from the Rembetiko transformation, the lyrics are more like an actual song with a recurring refrain, that "keeps coming back like a bad habit": tight, gritty, with simple words, emotional punch, repetition doing the work.

The lyrics explore the complexities of love and freedom, expressing a deep emotional conflict. The narrator conveys a passionate desire for connection while simultaneously acknowledging the pain that comes with it. There is a yearning for the beloved to be both free and wholly theirs, highlighting the tension between possession and liberation. The imagery of love being as fleeting as smoke suggests a transient nature of relationships, where the heart′s desires can lead to both ecstasy and sorrow. Overall, the song captures the bittersweet essence of love, longing, and the struggle for emotional independence.

As with the first Rembetiko version, I set the Rembetiko-style lyrics to Laïkó music.
