Introduction
I wrote this poem about the contradiction of being love, wanting to be free, but also wanting to belong.
As the willingness to voice the conflicting demands so openly felt a bit rebellious, my first try was to set the poem as a rock ballad.

After listening to the first Rock Ballad version, I changed some of the words to make the lines sound more like a song.

Of course, I acknowledge that you're free

Never being dependent on me
although my possession for all time.
Respecting your own identity
I want to mould you like clay.
Accepting what you'd like to be
you ought to change the way I say.
I want you being proud and strong
though obedient even if you're right,
challenging me when I'm wrong
you should give in without a fight.

I set the original version in a rock ballad style to give the lyrics a direct and emotionally grounded voice. Rock fits the rebellious nature of unapologetically stating contradicting demands, and the ballad allows it also to voice the romantic notions of the poem, which places the contradictions in the lyrics under pressure. The music frames the paradox not as something to accept, but as something that demands to be felt and confronted.
This version establishes the core emotional and conceptual tension at the heart of the piece.

I set this version in a hard rock style to give the lyrics a more forceful and unapologetic voice.
The genre demands conviction, even when the lyrics are contradictory. Instead of softening the paradox, the music amplifies it, turning tension into something almost confrontational. The delivery makes the contradictions feel less like a quiet truth and more like a statement that insists on being accepted. What might feel reflective in other versions becomes here something confrontational, where paradox is stated rather than questioned.

Interaction Between Music & Lyrics
Listening to the rock version made me realise that it is coming from a very male perspective, and it could be argued that there is less on an exploration of the intricate paradoxes of a love relationship and more of male pretenting to grant freedom and independance and all that jazz, but all he really wants is the submission by the woman.
And I wondered if this would change if the song was delivered by a woman in a same-sex relationship instead. The female vocal perspective reframes the dynamic of possession and freedom, making the tension feel less like a gender assertion and more like cheeky negotiation. An almost playful discourse with a wink.
I set this version in a dark pop style to draw the lyrics into a more intimate and psychologically charged space. The female voice shifts the perspective of desire, making the relationship feel both more direct and more nuanced. The music leans into restraint and atmosphere, allowing the emotional tension to sit just beneath the surface.
